Andrea Featherby and Marie Boxall gained their PPL’s. |
| 15th | The evening arranged to celebrate
Battle of Britain day was a huge success. All 45 tickets were
sold out within 7 days of going on sale.
![]() It was touch and go during the day as to whether the event would actually happen at all. The Spitfire initially had a couple of minor problems but arrived on time flown by Paul Day. The real problem was the weather at the Hurricane’s home base of Duxford, bad visibility and a cloud base below 400 feet. Things picked up during the early afternoon however and Clive Denney arrived in the Hurricane 10 minutes before the group of schoolchildren we had invited to view the two aircraft and learn about them from the pilots. The evening event started with a two course meal and informal
meet in the bar and restaurant before retiring to the hangar for
the main event.
The atmosphere when the Spitfire and Hurricane came on screen and the sound of their Merlin engines reverberated around the hangar whilst sitting flanked by the two aircraft themselves had to be experienced to be believed. All in all probably one of the most successful events we have staged and one unlikely to be repeated. Thanks to Clive Denney, Paul Day, the restaurant staff, local schools that had the foresight to acknowledge the day’s importance, Nigel Willson for supplying the video equipment, Big Nose Barrell for the entertainment during dinner and last but by no means least the sponsors who would prefer to remain anonymous. |

Club fly out to Jersey. Both Cessna 150’s were flown to Jersey for the annual Battle of Britain display week by club members. Once there the same members plus others who had travelled by scheduled airliner used them to fly to both Guernsey and Alderney as well as local flights around the island. We were hosted by Jersey Aero Club who are a terrific and friendly club. Well worth a visit. |

BBMF’s Spitfire and Hurricane were kept in our hangar overnight whilst the Lancaster, B17, Catalina, Harrier, PC7, Fouga Magister and the Red Arrows were parked outside. |

First we had a very entertaining talk from Clive
on flying the Spitfire and Hurricane before a video show on a
large screen with surround sound.
BBMF’s
Spitfire mark 9 was based with us for the day whilst it carried
out its flypast commitments over the city of Norwich.
The Red
Arrows visited twice more this month and used our club
facilities whilst displaying at both Clacton and Cromer.
All three
Yak 52’s were displayed at Ramsey near Peterborough for the two
day event held there.
and the Yak 52 took on Elmsett’s finest, Nigel
Willson, during the terrific and well organised Elmsett
Breakfast patrol. Using methods most devious we all won a free
breakfast and also the flour bombing! Many thanks to Nigel for a
great day and one to put in your diary for next year.
